Over the years I’ve been very fortunate to have experienced both good and bad leaders. It’s easy to learn from a good leader but it’s even easier to learn from a bad one. Bad leaders usually fail with rather easy and obvious to learn lessons for all those observing the failure.

Additionally over the years companies have become obsessed with developing leaders and measuring leadership. Leadership bootcamps, year long programmes, even one day workshops all strive to imbue leadership qualities into people who may or may not posses leadership potential. This kind of leadership training tends to drive a false sense of success in those people selected to be leaders. It also breeds resentment amongst those with talent that otherwise go unrecognised. The subsequent product of this ‘leadership by numbers’ approach usually ends with very mediocre leaders who fail to deliver.
