iPhone software development, or not, as the case may be

iphoneIn what appears to be a master stroke of incompetence or total self absorption, Apple has stifled software development on the iPhone. The inclusion of an NDA as part of the iPhone’s SDK terms and conditions (which developers must agree to,) prevents them from discussing iPhone software development issues with others.

What seems to be a trivial issue at first, has spawned such ire and frustration that a website called FuckingNDA has begun to track all the problems developers have with the restrictions.

iGoogle versus Netvibes

iGoogleUp until very recently I was a big fan of iGoogle, advocating it to friends and family, aswell as using it on my mobile phone. Unfortunately Google decided to ‘improve’ iGoogle and make it less usable for long time users like myself.

NetvibesI like to be able to review a dozen or so rss feeds through iGoogle, clicking through to the whole story on the actual originating website. The new iGoogle now loads click-throughs directly on the same page, expanding the rss pane to include the full specified rss content. This isn’t Opera Mini start pagewhat I want and I believe other iGoogle users will feel the same. People want to click-through to the actual site to see the content in situ with all the features and functionality of the originating site. Usually this includes related stories, more pictures, and generally a more feature rich experience.

Herb based the event on the now hugely popular TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference in the US. He’d taken obvious pointers from TED and incorporated them successfully into this year’s Thinking Digital.

I am a “Slash” – finally one label to rule them all

slashAfter doing the mother of all start-ups, Genie (a very well funded BT initiative,) which then became O2 (now a Telefónica company,) I decided to take a break from corporate life and begin a new career as an independent professional working across multiple industries, practising multiple disciplines.

At the end of 2003, it seemed logical to me that I should bring to bear all the benefit of my experience gained from different companies, positions, in the different industries I’d worked in. Thus, in order avoid pigeonholing myself and also to improve my appeal to as many potential clients as possible, I styled myself as an Advisor, Entrepreneur and Corporate Executive. I spent a lot of my time advising companies in the Venture Capital and Private Equity space, as well as working with start-ups like Qpass (now an Amdocs business unit,) Liberty Europe (now a LastMile business,) and also some big corporates.
